2024 Umpire Convenors: Kylie Middleton and Emily Hall

2024 Assistant Umpire Convenors: Karen Azarnia and Grace Middleton

Ku-ring-gai Netball Association (KNA) require each club to provide one umpire for every team the club has playing in each timeslot, as well as Standby (SB) and Injury (INJ) umpires for emergencies. However, an umpire will not umpire a game involving their own club as the competition is not umpire-your-own; the umpire will be allocated another game in the same timeslot.

New Umpires

As a new umpire you will be umpiring the 10s competition on a Saturday at 8.00am, at Canoon Road. There may be opportunities later in the year to umpire a different timeslot, but everyone must start with the 10s competitions.

Prior to the season starting, KNA runs a Beginner Umpires Workshop course which is compulsory for all new umpires with St Ives. This year the course is being held on Sunday 10th March 2024.

There is also the 9 years Round Robin competition which is on Sunday 17th March 2024, which provides a valuable practical experience as a follow up to the Beginner Umpires Workshop, and prior to the commencement of the Winter season. The games are only 10 minutes long and we have buddies to assist you on the court.

Both experiences are important as they will help inform decisions on who will be progressing as an umpire with the club as there will not be enough active umpiring slots for everyone who shows interest.

Buddies

St Ives allocates buddies to most games for District umpires. You will be buddied by fellow St Ives (STI) umpires before being assessed for your next umpire badge. You will need to always have your ‘Buddy Notebook’ with you. Your buddy will use this for recording details of buddying sessions. When you are assessed for a badge, your book will be checked to see how you have improved and what you are working on. If you have not received a STI Buddy Umpire Kit, by the end of the workshop, please ask.

National Development of Umpires

Senior St Ives umpires also provide mentoring to our HD and National C umpires. Our more senior umpires are also coached by KNA to help attain their National badges. The National badging process at KNA is in line with the Framework provided by Netball Australia.

KNA Carnivals

Umpires are encouraged to attend carnivals as it’s a great opportunity to receive coaching from KNA’s senior umpires. If you cannot find your own way there, KNA can usually find a lift for you to and from the carnivals. Carnival payments are made by KNA.

Changing Umpire Times

If you discover you cannot umpire on a date you have been assigned to, you need to advise umpire@stivesnetball.com.au ASAP. KNA need to be advised of changes by 5.00pm on the Wednesday before the game AT THE LATEST. While we understand things happen, advising us of not being available at the last minute because of a commitment you knew about well in advance is not appreciated. However, if you are sick and it is after the Wednesday deadline, please contact Emily Hall (0458 668 466) or Kylie Middleton (0400 997 512) on and, as soon as possible. Both are primarily available on WhatsApp and please also use the umpiring email, umpiring@stivesnetball.com.au.

Communication

We communicate with you via email, so it is important to ensure we have your correct email address and you need to be checking your emails regularly. We also require a phone contact in case we need to contact you. Sometimes this can be Saturday morning (if we a desperately looking for umpire or discover your game has been cancelled) so a mobile number (if you have one) is best.

For communication on gameday the best port of call is the SINC Umpiring 2024 chat on WhatsApp. All umpires will be added to this chat, and it is the best place to put unavailability in order to find a quick replacement.

If you need anything at all, Kylie, Emily, Karen, and Grace will be around (usually at the STI tent or on court) or your buddy can help you. Please don’t be afraid if you’re feeling intimidated or overwhelmed, please let someone know so we can help you. We want to make sure you feel comfortable, supported, and get the most out of your umpiring. Most of all, we want you to HAVE FUN!
